That didn't happen though because Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib decided he wanted to poke out the eye of Colts tight end Dwayne Allen. After the Colts gained 2 yards on a second-and-9 with left, the Colts were about to face a pivotal third down, but they never had to because Talib was hit with an unnecessary roughness penalty for poking Allen in the eye.
In the CBS screengrab below, that's Talib's hand in the red gloves, even though he's not in the picture. Allen had got into an altercation with Broncos linebacker Von Miller , when Talib decided to interfere. Aqib Talib walked up to Colts tight end Dwayne Allen, casually reached up and into his facemask, and stuck his finger in his goddamn eye.
Talib did it right in front of the refs to boot. Which will always result in a yard penalty, but the game-context of the penalty made it all the worse. The Colts were facing a 3rd-and-7 with remaining. With a stop and a Colts field goal, Peyton Manning and the Broncos would have had two minutes to mount a comeback, down only six.
